Course Overview and Target Audience:

In this first-of-its-kind symposium, top researchers from across the Penn community will gather in one location to discuss some of the fundamental ethical questions that arise at the frontiers of research today. Top Penn researchers will discuss the implications or challenges that such design choices present, as well as how to navigate them in the most effective and conscientious way possible.

Physicians, fellows, and residents across the Philadelphia area who conduct or are interested in conducting biomedical research.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of the activity, participants should be able to:

  • Identify the available models of informed consent, as well as its roles, and then interpret how this can best be sought in the context of the study (e.g. based on the study design or the technologies used or available)
  • Describe potential conflicts that may arise from overlaps between research and clinical care for the physician, as well as ideas for how to navigate professionally and which offices to engage
  • Identify the methods by which (and examples of content for which) the IRB can be contacted for assistance to help facilitate the physician's research

Registration Fees:

No fees are associated with attendance but attendees are requested to register in advance.

Breakfast, lunch, and  afternoon refreshments will be provided.
